Our Story

Welcome to Utopia

WHO we are and What we do

The Utopian is a small, 25-seat Bistro that specializes in artisan small plate cuisine. It is run by a husband and wife team who wanted to created an all inclusive place, where anyone is welcome to enjoy artisan cuisine with delicious local craft beer and our favorite wines. After 25 years of restaurant experience and world travels, we are bringing those experiences back to our home state of New Hampshire. Partnering with local farms and businesses, we hope our fair business practices and support of the local community will help in our success. We can't wait for you to join us on our journey!

The name

Utopia is known by Sir Thomas More, an English Statesman, as the perfect society. Sir Thomas More (1477 - 1535) was the first person to write of a 'utopia', a word used to describe a perfect imaginary world. More's book imagines a complex, self-contained community set on an island, in which people share a common culture and way of life. He coined the word 'utopia' from the Greek ou-topos meaning 'no place' or 'nowhere'. It was a pun - the almost identical Greek word eu-topos means 'a good place'. At the very heart of the word is a vital question: can a perfect world ever be realized? It is unclear as to whether the book is a serious projection of a better way of life, or a satire that gave More a platform from which to discuss the chaos of European politics, which, at the time could be cruel and have a large separation of classes.

Utopia can exist, as it has in our hearts for many centuries! The concept of Utopia is a place where all of our unique lives can come together for commonality. A place where the food speaks of our travels, the drinks create a warmth in our souls, and the atmosphere is comforting, where everyone is treated as an equal. Utopia is run from the bottom up, by the employees, not ruled from the top down with an iron fist, making the employees a part of the decision-making process, fair pay for a fair day of work, incentives, wellness, and much more. Utopia offers a happy, safe, comfortable, learning environment for staff and customers alike to thrive.

Understanding this concept has been ingrained in me after many years in the service and hospitality industry. I am typically hired to help struggling businesses thrive. Never have I run into a challenge I couldn’t handle or fix. It all comes down to passion. When businesses lose their way and lack the passion to deliver the goods and services, they call me! I am on the board of directors for Skills USA, NHLRA, and the education foundation, as well as an advisor for Pro-start. I am big into education and development. Many of the workers that started with me many years ago, are still working with for me today in much more developed capacity. I am known for taking dishwashers and fry cooks and turning them into career professionals with a common goal of taking care of Hospitality and the communities in which we live. I spent 5 years in school exposing myself to anything and everything I could fit into my paradigm. At this point in my life and career, I am looking for the next step. Fixing problems routinely caused by lack of effort and follow through which plagues the hospitality industry, I want to create an environment that can truly be unlike any other. The concept of Utopia can be realized and put into action! Understanding this is just a jumping off point, many other ideas are sure to be put into action along the way. From multiple restaurants, food service management, and off-site catering, I am hoping to make Utopia synonymous with the face of New Hampshire hospitality. A restaurant and service which puts its employees and customers first. A place where we can all dine in a perfect Utopia!
